For many indigenous people, the feather symbolizes trust, honour, strength, wisdom, power, and freedom. This board was made by a student and combines an icon of their heritage with one of their passions, a feather and a skateboard!
The 3-dimensional shape of the street deck board resembles the natural shape a feather might have.
After laminating a standard street deck, the edges were detailed using a jig saw.
This student’s personal brand name is “Filth” which they ingeniously stitched right into the board. Holes were drilled through the deck and recycled black t-shirt fabric used for the letters.
A feather can also symbolize freedom and the power to soar. This certainly ties in with what skateboard decks and going skateboarding means to a lot of riders!
Some say feathers are symbols of dreams and aspirations, or that dreaming about feathers signifies that you are going to go on an adventure, all thoroughly relatable in terms of skateboards. I had fun web searching about feathers, and I encourage you to look into them too. Apparently, it is disrespectful to hide a feather in a drawer or closet (especially an eagle feather).
Ours is proudly displayed on our wall at our Toronto location, visible as soon as you walk in the door.
Suggestion: Teachers, perhaps your students would appreciate learning about the connections between the animal/bird world, the spirit world, and skateboards! Design a project for students to explore these ideas and create an essay to document their research.
This skateboard was made by a student at the Oasis Skateboard Factory, in Toronto ON Canada.
